UK engineering awards rack up for Luton apprentice

The engineering achievements of Luton-based Industrial Engineering Technician, Philip West, have been recognised in the national manufacturing awards of two separate UK institutions.

Phil won the 2015 EEF Future Manufacturing Awards under the category, 'Apprentice of the Year – Final Year' after winning the 'Outstanding Apprentice of the Year' award at the South East regional finals.

Previously, Phil had been a finalist in the 'Young Manufacturer of the Year' category of the national Manufacturer MX Awards, organised by The Manufacturer magazine and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Philp was chosen for his work developing manufacturing process improvements on various products, including the introduction of a lean pull system.

Rob Armstrong, Head of Mechanical Engineering (Luton), said: "Phil has made a real impact to the Manufacturing & Supply Chain function at Leonardo. I have been particularly impressed by the way in which he has applied his learning, both from his University course and from his Lean Six Sigma Black Belt to his everyday working, making real improvements to our manufacturing facility at Luton."
