Air: Protecting our skies and those that fly
Our AW101 is the most advanced, versatile and capable multi-role helicopter available today. The Commando Merlin Mk4a used by Royal Navy’s Commando Helicopter Force (known as ‘the Junglies’), is fully optimised for amphibious operations and forms part of HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier fleet.
Under Team Tempest, Leonardo is working with the RAF Rapid Capability Office, BAE Systems, Rolls Royce and MBDA to provide the technologies, knowledge, skills and expertise to develop a Next Generation Combat Air System capable of operating in the 2040+ environment.
Leonardo is a Eurofighter Typhoon consortium partner, providing the Royal Air Force with its multi-role combat air capability. We are responsible for delivering over 60% of the aircraft’s on-board avionics including leading the consortia that develop both the Radar and Defensive Aid Sub-System.
Supporting missions for the UK Royal Navy and British Army, our AW159 Wildcat helicopter is designed to operate in the world’s harshest environments. Whether hunting submarines or offering battlefield force-protection, the Wildcat provides a flexible multi-role capability on land and at the sea.
Our UK-produced ‘Falcon Shield’ system – which accurately detects, tracks, identifies, geo-locates and mitigates rogue drone threats – was deployed by the Royal Air Force following sighting of drones at Gatwick airport, to confirm the absence of drones and allow air operations to resume unhindered.
