November

12 November saw the 10th anniversary of AW159 Wildcat’s first flight, and we remembered the first time the helicopter lifted off from Yeovil and took to the skies in 2009.

Army Wildcat's first decade

Commanding Officer of 1 Regiment Army Air Corps, Charlie Scott, explains how since its maiden flight in 2009, the Army Wildcat helicopter has become an integral part of the Army's operations and exercises around the world.

We continued our diversity campaign with the celebration of International Men’s Day on 19 November, with several of our senior management team explaining how they are #LeadingByExample to promote equality and inclusivity across our business. November was also Movember, which featured Leonardo employees from around the UK supporting the leading men’s health charity by ‘growing a mo for a bro’ and organising other fundraising activities.

Awards season continued for Leonardo into November with Jane McDonald, our Head of Diversity and Inclusion, being shortlisted at the European Diversity Awards. Elsewhere, Kris Harrison, our UK Engineering Innovation Lead, was shortlisted for the renowned Changemaker prize at the 2019 Industrial Cadet Awards, and in Scotland, our Edinburgh Apprentice Jordanne Currie was a finalist at the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards.

Not to be outdone, a team of British & Italian Leonardo engineers was recognised at the Royal Aeronautical Society’s annual Honours, Medals & Awards ceremony for its work on the AW159’s Digital Automatic Flight Control System. The evening also saw Daniel Young, a senior project engineer at our Yeovil site, receiving the Alan Marsh award, given to a ‘young person showing technical and leadership promise’.

Rounding off the month, Leonardo's thermal camera technology was featured in the Europe episode of the BBC's Seven World One Planet series presented by David Attenborough. Our cameras captured footage of grey wolves hunting red deer on an Apennine mountainside at night.
