Electronics, Defence and Security Systems (Basildon, Bristol, Edinburgh, Luton & Southampton)

All our apprenticeships offer working environments in which you will be working within cutting-edge facilities. There may also be opportunities for travel between the company’s UK sites and to meet with colleagues, customers and suppliers. Below is a summary of each role type.

Applications are now closed for our apprenticeship programme at our Scottish and English sites. They will reopen in autumn 2023, for roles starting in 2024.

Manufacturing Apprenticeships – 3-year programme (Basildon & Luton)

Leonardo’s three-year Manufacturing Apprenticeships provide a wealth of learning and development opportunities including a BTEC Level 2 & 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering along with a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - Technical Support Technician. Working with world-leading specialists, you will increase your technical skills and capabilities and develop your academic and practical understanding of the diverse world that is manufacturing and supply chain.

You will undertake a series of three-month rotational placements – covering Mechanical Assembly, Electromechanical Assembly, Electro Optic Assembly, Environmental Facility, Material Supply and Logistics, Master Production Scheduling and Industrial Engineering – identifying and resolving problems as they occur, within basic operating procedures. You will also learn how to build industry-leading infrared cameras and detector systems, and how to test these systems under multiple environmental stresses. You’ll experience how we manage the flow of material through our supply chain, and how we ensure the process is as efficient as possible.

The apprenticeship will involve daily meetings on schedule adherence, load boards and visual KPIs, with an emphasis on you organising your own workload to ensure time is utilised effectively. Depending on your role, you may be working in an office or lab environment, or a combination of both.

Qualifications required: 2 x GCSE grades 4-9 or grades A-C, or equivalent (e.g. Functional Skills Level 2), Mandatory: English & Maths or equivalent

Manufacturing Apprenticeships – 3-year programme (Southampton)

Leonardo’s three-year Manufacturing Apprenticeships provide a wealth of learning and development opportunities including Engineering BTEC, NVQ level 2 (PEO) and a Level 3 NVQ in Engineering. Working with world-leading specialists, you will increase your technical skills and capability, and develop your academic and practical understanding of the diverse world that is manufacturing and supply chain.

You will undertake a series of three-month rotational placements – covering Mechanical Assembly, Electromechanical Assembly, Electro Optic Assembly, Environmental Facility, Material Supply and Logistics, Master Production Scheduling and Industrial Engineering – identifying and resolving problems as they occur, within basic operating procedures. Technical Apprenticeships – 4-year programme (Basildon, Luton, Filton & Southampton)

This four-year apprenticeship provides a wealth of hands-on learning and development opportunities including a BTEC Level 2 & 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering along with a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - Technical Support Technician. Working with world-leading specialists, you will increase your technical skills and capability, and develop your academic and practical understanding of the engineering design lifecycle by deploying the methods of designing electrical and mechanical systems.

You will undertake a series of three-month placements – covering Mechanical, Electronic, Systems, Software and Quality Engineer – that will train you in the design and development of industry-leading radar and laser systems. Other placements will be laboratory-based, testing and developing cutting-edge PCB assemblies.

Qualifications required: 5 x GCSE grades 4-9 or grades A*-C or equivalent (e.g. Functional Skills Level 2). Mandatory: English, Maths and Science

Business Apprenticeships – 2-year programme (Basildon, Luton & Southampton)

Leonardo’s two-year Business Apprenticeship provides a wealth of learning and development opportunities whilst gaining a Level 3 Business and Administration qualification. You will work alongside specialists while completing a series of four-month rotational placements across the company – in Sales & Marketing, Commercial, Procurement, Finance, Project Management, Bid Management and Human Resources – that will springboard you into the world of business.

You will learn how various business areas operate, discovering how projects are run, managed and delivered, and having opportunities to liaise with customers and suppliers. There may also be opportunities for travel between the company’s UK and international sites.

Qualifications required: 2 x A Levels (Grade A*-C) one of which must be English, Maths or a Business subject (examples; Business Studies, Economics, Project/Business Management, Finance, Accounts etc – not to include Media or IT) 

OR An alternative Level 3 qualification, which must be in a business-related subject

AND GCSE (Grade 4 - 9 / Grade A* - C) in Maths and English

Cyber Security Apprenticeships / Cyber Security Engineering Apprenticeship – 4-year programme (Bristol)

Leonardo’s four-year Cyber Security Apprenticeship provides a wealth of learning and development opportunities including a BTEC L3 Award infrastructure Technician and BCS L4 Cyber Security Technologist. The programme is tailored to provide a springboard into the world of Cyber Security, focused on the following areas:

  • Protective Monitoring – analysing network, application, security device and system log events to identify potentially abnormal or malicious system or user behaviours and raise them as incidents. These will then be investigated and, if appropriate, escalated to customer or technical resources for remedial action.
  • Incident Response – undertaking in-depth incident investigations, analysing malware and conducting forensics acquisition and investigations, including threat hunting and security research.
  • ICT Administration – supporting the ICT infrastructure that underpins the Security Operation Centre and our client-based monitoring points, and maintaining security devices including the deployment of detection signatures and patches.
  • Service Management – reporting, change management, service reviews, configuration management and Service Level Agreements.

Qualifications required: 5 x GCSE grades 4-9 or grades A*-C, to include English, Maths and IT or equivalents.

Design Engineer Technical Apprenticeships – 4-year programme (Edinburgh)

This four-year apprenticeship provides a wealth of hands-on learning and development opportunities including an HND Engineering Systems, SVQ level 2 (PEO) and SVQ level 3 in Engineering Technical Support. Working with world-leading specialists, you will increase your technical skills and capability, and develop your academic and practical understanding of the engineering design lifecycle by deploying the methods of designing electrical and mechanical systems.

You will undertake a series of three-month placements – covering Mechanical, Electronic, Systems, Software and Quality Engineer – that will train you in the design and development of industry-leading radar and laser systems. Other placements will be laboratory-based, testing and developing cutting-edge PCB assemblies.

Qualifications required: 3 x Higher Grades (or equivalent – not HND)
Mandatory: Mathematics (A-C) AND Mandatory Physics or Engineering Science (A-C)
Plus Another Higher subject, preferably a Technological subject e.g. Graphic Communication, Product Design, Craft & Design, Tech Studies, Computing etc. (A-C)
AND Standard Grade (1-3) / National 5 (A-C): English 

Manufacturing Technical Apprenticeship – 4-year programme (Edinburgh)

This four-year apprenticeship provides a wealth of learning and development opportunities including an HND in Engineering systems, SVQ level 2 (PEO) and SVQ level 3 (Engineering technical support). Working with world-leading specialists, you will increase your technical skills and capability, and develop your academic and practical understanding of the engineering lifecycle.

You will undertake a series of three-month rotational placements in the methods of testing industry-leading radar and laser systems – covering Electronic Testing; Laser Testing; Radar Testing; Industrial Engineering; Test Solutions.

Qualifications required: 3 x Higher Grades (or equivalent – not HND)
Mandatory: Mathematics (A-C) 
AND Mandatory Physics (A-C) or Engineering Science (A-C)
Plus Another Higher subject, preferably a Technological subject e.g. Graphic Communication, Product Design, Craft & Design, Tech Studies, Computing etc. (A-C)
AND Standard Grade (1-3) / National 5 (A-C): English

This three-year apprenticeship provides a wealth of learning and development opportunities including an NC in Engineering systems, SVQ level 2 (PEO) and SVQ level 3 (Engineering technical support). Working with world-leading specialists, you will increase your technical skills and capability, and develop your academic and practical understanding of the diverse world that is manufacturing and supply chain.

You will undertake a series of three-month rotational placements – covering Mechanical Assembly, Electromechanical Assembly, Electro Optic Assembly, Environmental Facility, Material Supply and Logistics, Master Production Scheduling, Industrial Engineering and Machine Shop – that will springboard you into the world of manufacturing and teach you how to build and test industry-leading radar and laser systems. You’ll experience how we manage the flow of material through our supply chain and how we ensure the process is as efficient as possible.

Qualifications required: 4 Standard Grades (1-3) / National 5 (A-C) or National 4 (or equivalent – not NC, HNC or HND)
Mandatory: Mathematics & English
Plus another 2 subjects, preferably Physics or Technological subjects e.g. Graphic Communication, Product Design, Craft & Design, Tech Studies, Computing, Woodwork, Metalwork etc.

Software Engineering Graduate Apprenticeship – 4-year programme (Edinburgh)

Leonardo’s four-year Software Engineering Apprenticeship programme is looking for people who understand the importance of communication, who are able to work well as part of a team and also on their own initiative. You will have the drive and commitment to work through difficult problems to find the right engineering solutions. You will study for completion of a BSc Hons in Software Development for Business on a day release basis whilst you are at work. You will gain the academic requirements for Incorporated Engineer as part of the way to gaining Chartered Engineer status.

Note: This apprenticeship assumes the candidate has very little software knowledge and is not suitable for candidates who already have a computing or software degree.

Qualifications required: 5 Higher Grades (or equivalent): BBBBC 
Mandatory: Mathematics. Preferably including Physics and Computing
AND Standard Grades (1-3) / National 5: (A-C) in English (or equivalent qualifications to Highers/ Standard Grades).

Design Engineering Technical Graduate Apprenticeship – 4-year programme (Edinburgh)

This four-year apprenticeship provides a wealth of hands-on learning and development opportunities leading to a BEng. (Hons) Engineering: Design & Manufacturing. Working with world-leading specialists, you will increase your technical skills and capability, and develop your academic and practical understanding of the engineering design lifecycle by deploying the methods of designing electrical and mechanical systems.

You will undertake a series of three-month placements – covering Mechanical, Electronic, Systems, Software and Quality Engineering – that will train you in the design and development of industry-leading radar and laser systems. 

Qualifications required: 4 Higher Grades (or equivalent): BBBB 
Mandatory: Mathematics
AND Mandatory: Physics or a Technology subject 
Preferred: English and another STEM subject e.g. Graphic Communication, Product Design, Craft & Design, Tech Studies, Computing, Woodwork, Metalwork etc.
AND Standard Grades (1-3) / National 5: (A-C) in English 

Business Apprenticeship – 2-year programme (Scotland)

Leonardo’s two-year Business Apprenticeship provides a variety of experiences through placements in business-related disciplines, working on real projects alongside specialists in the world of business. Placements you may cover include Commercial, Finance, Procurement, Manufacturing and Supply Chain, Project Planning, Bid Management and Project Management. 

You will work towards achievement of an HNC Business and SVQ level 3 Business & Administration.

During the three-month placements, you will learn how the various business areas operate, discover how projects are run, managed and delivered, and have opportunities to liaise with customers and suppliers.

Qualifications required: 2 X Higher Grades (or equivalent)
Mandatory: (A-C) Mathematics OR (A-C) English
Mandatory: (A-C) Business subject (examples; Business Studies, Project/Business Management, Finance, Accounts etc.)

Helicopters (Yeovil)

All our helicopter apprenticeships in Yeovil offer working environments in which you will be working within cutting-edge facilities. There may also be opportunities for travel between the company’s UK sites and to meet with colleagues, customers and suppliers. Below is a summary of each role type.

 

Applications are now closed for our helicopter apprenticeship programme at our Yeovil site. They will reopen in autumn 2023, for roles starting in 2024.

Business Administration Apprenticeship

This office-based apprenticeship in Yeovil enables apprentices to move around different business areas within the Helicopters business, gaining valuable experience and knowledge. This exposure provides valuable insight into the workings of the business, how different functions interact and enables a high level of networking.

Apprentices will follow a structured placement programme designed to ensure broad experience is gained in the required competencies, working with experienced and qualified individuals in each work placement to learn the required skills, knowledge and behaviour.

Craft Apprenticeship – Transmissions Repair and Overhaul Apprenticeship

During this four-year practical engineering apprenticeship, apprentices will be trained to become a Mechanical Fitter specialising in the Repair and Overhaul of Transmissions equipment. Through a structured placement programme, apprentices will gain broad practical experience in the required competencies, working alongside skills fitters and learning to maintain/repair and test aircraft transmissions parts and systems in our maintenance and test facilities.

Craft Apprenticeship – Composites Engineering

Our four-year Composite Engineering Apprenticeship Programme caters for those who are interested in the hands-on elements of engineering, in particular composite materials and their use in aircraft production. You will be trained to become a Composite Fitter, manufacturing and repairing composite aircraft components such as blades.

Through a structured placement programme, apprentices will gain broad practical experience in the required competencies, working alongside skills fitters. The apprenticeship is based within the Dynamics Composites Centre (DCC), moving around the various build areas as detailed below.

Craft Apprenticeship – Electrical

Our four-year Electrical Apprenticeship Programme caters for those who are interested in the hands-on elements of engineering, with a particular focus on fitting, maintaining and testing aircraft electrical systems (cabling, avionics etc). You will be trained to become an Electrical/Avionic Aircraft Fitter.

In a helicopter context, Electrical Engineering covers areas such as electrical, communication, navigation, surveillance and weapon systems. Electrical/Avionic Aircraft Fitters are trained to fit and maintain/repair aircraft parts and systems, and work on the aircraft daily in our production and maintenance facilities.

Craft Apprenticeship – Mechanical

Our four-year Mechanical Apprenticeship Programme caters for those who are interested in the hands-on elements of engineering. You will be trained to become a Mechanical Aircraft Fitter.

n a helicopter context, Mechanical Engineering covers areas such as airframe, propulsion, fuel, hydraulics, flying controls, rotors and transmissions. Mechanical Aircraft Fitters are trained to fit and maintain/repair aircraft parts and systems, and work on the aircraft daily in our production and maintenance facilities. Through a structured placement programme, apprentices will gain broad practical experience in the required competencies, working alongside skills fitters.

Craft Apprenticeship – Site/Transmission Maintenance Engineer

Our four-year maintenance apprenticeships allow individuals to learn specific skills and competencies that will allow them to service, maintain and repair plant and equipment which are used to manufacture key components for Leonardo helicopters.

Training covers a range of skills from Health and Safety through to specialist plant and equipment training. Throughout this period, the apprentices will work with skilled maintenance engineers, gaining experience in both electrical and mechanical systems.

Craft Apprenticeship – Machinist

Our four-year Machinist Apprenticeship caters for those who are interested in the hands on elements of engineering, in particular the creation of aircraft transmissions (e.g. gears, gearbox housing, etc). Apprentices will be trained to become a Transmission Machinist, working in a machining environment with both CNC and conventional lathes, requiring high attention to detail.

Degree Apprenticeship – Electrical Engineering / Mechanical Engineering

Our five-year Electrical and Mechanical Degree Apprenticeships cater for those who are interested in the theoretical aspects, concept development and performance analysis of our products. You will gain the majority of your experience through placements in our Engineering function, focussing on the design and system performance analysis within a wide range of disciplines. For Electrical Engineers, these will be power generation systems, tactical software, communication systems, navigations systems and overall system architecture, while for Mechanical Engineers, these will be aircraft structures, propulsion systems, rotor blade engineering, transmissions engineering and testing.

Our Electrical and Mechanical Engineers are primarily office-based but frequently work closely with aircraft, during the product development and production phases. Apprentices will plan/schedule engineering activities, play an active part in ensuring an efficient manufacturing process; design electrical components and systems using 3D modelling software. There are also opportunities to undertake testing activities, to support development and production of our products, as well performance analysis of the electrical components and their intrinsic systems.

Early Careers application process

Stage 1 – Application Form

The first stage of the application process is to complete the application form and upload your CV for the desired role you want to apply for.

Please note: in order to apply for our opportunities, you must be eligible for UK Security Clearance. Normally this is to the level of Security Check (typically known as “SC”) for our business which includes having a minimum of 5 years’ permanent residency in the UK.


Stage 2 – On-Demand Video & Game-based Assessments

If you pass the Eligibility Questionnaire you will automatically be sent an invitation to complete the on-demand video interview and game-based assessments.

Given the limited roles available and the large numbers of applications we are receiving, we strongly recommend that you complete the following two activities as soon as you receive confirmation of your eligibility.

On Demand Video Interview – You will be asked several competency-based questions, providing you with the opportunity to record a video of yourself answering each one. Some practice questions will get you comfortable with the process and the HireVue platform. Once you have completed the practice questions, you will begin the interview. 

Game-based Assessments – Once you have completed the Video interview, you will complete the game-based assessments, featuring two timed games that you will be scored on.

After completing both sections, you will receive an email thanking you and noting that you will hear from Leonardo soon.


Stage 3 – Interview & Presentations

If you are successful after the On-demand and Game-based Assessments, you will be contacted to arrange a live interview. During the live interview, you will be asked to complete a presentation which is relevant to the role.

Below is what you will see during the interview process, along with instructions on how to share your screen if you have a PowerPoint that you want to share as part of your presentation.

You will be presented with three options for sharing your screen:

  1. Your entire screen
  2. Application Window
  3. NW.js Tab.

Please click the Application window option and select the correct window to display your presentation.


Stage 4 – Offer

After the interview and presentation, we will provide all candidates with feedback. If you are successful in your application, the Leonardo recruitment team will subsequently contact you to formally offer you the role.
