Naval Optronics

Our electro-optical / Infra-red capability developed by our engineers in Basildon lies at the heart of the targeting and tracking systems that are helping to provide protection for many of the Royal Navy’s vessels including the GSA8 Fire Control System Type 23 Frigate and the Glide Path Camera for Royal Navy’s new Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers.

Leonardo offers cutting-edge capabilities in electro-optical (EO) technologies and systems, which underpin the observation, tracking and target acquisition, all of which are paramount to the success of a naval mission.

Laser fire power

As part of the MBDA-led UK Dragonfire consortium, Leonardo is working with UK MOD and dstl to develop a Laser Directed Energy Weapon (LDEW) capable of providing short-range air defense capability or close-in protection for naval vessels, by tracking, deterring or even destroying an incoming threat.
